Brief History of the Trucking Industry in the USA

How Did the Modern Trucking Company Appear & Develop in America?
Just like in any other business, trucking was influenced by the economic and political conditions over the years in the United States. If you are curious to find out more facts about when the first trucking company appeared in the country, please keep reading:
Before these giant vehicles were invented, large cargoes and goods were transported across the country by trains and horse-driven wagons. Can you imagine those simple wooden wagons moving slowly from town to town? Back in the early 1900’s, the first trailer truck appeared, this was simply the only mode of transportation for the population living then. Those truck-like vehicles had solid rubber tires and a motor located underneath the driver’s seat. The roads back then were in bad condition making the ride tough and slow. Later on, around 1920, new vehicles appeared. They had pneumatic tires and more modern engines allowing them to travel at a much higher speed.
During the World War I, the need of sending food, ammunition, and other goods to both short and long distances imposed the invention of more modern trucks to be able to carry heavier loads across America. Only two years after the war, the U.S had over one million trucks. At the time, diesel engines gained popularity too.
Trucking achieved the biggest attention in 1950’s and 1960’s when truck drivers started to pass special driving tests. Those vehicles became more and more complicated, and by 1970’s there were already huge semi-trailer trucks traveling from state to state that could carry freights with weight limit until 73, 208 pounds.
The truck industry gained real popularity in the 20th century when the demand for safe and timely transportation of foods and other goods became a necessity. People need a more efficient and cost-effective way to send items from point A to point B. Today, any trucking company can offer this popular and speedy mode of transportation all around the world.
